The last two days have been spent knee-deep in edits (metaphorically speaking of course; I was working purely in the digital domain!). Now a good way into recording his second album with us, Ben Drake has spent a great deal of time tracking recently, so I’ve currently got a massive backlog of editing work, some of which I managed to get through. Yesterday afternoon however, I took an hour out to record Caroline Riches (from ‘Ragged Staff’) a fiddle, and – to my surprise – a dulcimer, for a folk track, titled ‘I Lay Stretched On Your Grave’. Dulcimers are …
Just completed a ‘Weekender’ session at SoundARC with singer/songwriter Ryan Lownds. We worked fast, and managed to get three full-band tracks and two acoustic tracks recorded and mixed, and then mastered his entire album’s worth of material, all in twenty hours! The challenge came from having to slip in two tracks which were recorded elsewhere, and had a very different sonic footprint. However, with a little lot of equalisation and a touch bucketload of compression, we got everything sitting nicely in the end.
Well it’s been a busy old few days! Sunday saw the beginning of a brand-new project at SoundARC, with singer/songwriter Chavassea Okeke in the studio. We had a very productive day, scratching out the structure to the first track of the project, ‘Still Walking’, then adding layers and sounds as we saw fit. Monday evening saw the return of FS1E, with some final mix tweaks before we master next month. Everything is sounding very nice indeed! Finally, today saw seven-piece function band ‘Kate’s Band’ lay down some feel-good standards with us. We moved fast, and managed to track three tunes …
Today saw something a little bit different at SoundARC, with the recording of ‘Strictly Swing’ – a new swing and big band outfit looking to break into the corporate market. The day was spent tracking drums, upright bass, and guitar to seven swing tracks, including ‘L.O.V.E.’, ‘Let There Be Love’, and even a swing version of ‘Isn’t She Lovely’, by Stevie Wonder! I was particularly pleased with how the drums turned out, as we made good use of the studio’s vintage Premier kit. All in all, a cracking day!
It was another busy one! Saturday saw FS1E at SoundARC, while Sunday saw and early start (and a late finish!) with Ben Drake. FS1E’s debut album is nearing completion, and we spent a day refining previous mixes, making sure that everything is ship-shape for mastering (taking place very soon). Sunday’s session saw more work completed on Ben’s second album, with guitar and backing vocals tracking. Both albums are sounding really great, and I can’t wait for them to finally be released to an unsuspecting public! :)
Today I was back at SoundARC for another ‘Live Demo’, this time with Kettering-based Grunge/Hard Rock crossovers Stonepit Drive. The four hour session saw Ant, Baz, Will, and Matt lay down five original tracks, giving us just enough time to mix, master, and wrap everything up at the end.
